Transgender, AIDS Sutra, Salman Rushdie & Everything In-Between

A Tamil movie I watched earlier today, reminded me of an article I read in this amazing book, AIDS Sutra, a few years ago. The Half-Woman God by Salman Rushdie which touches on the issue of transgender in India. The book was published in 2008 and features 16 prominent Indian authors from the likes of Kiran Desai, Vikram Setch, Shobhaa De and a few others. This particular movie portrayed a transgender (…) Read more

Matt Mullenweg gives up his smartphone for Lent

One of the other people I admire apart from the late Steve Jobs is Matt Mullenweg. Not exactly a familiar name here in Malaysia but for the benefit of those who don’t know, he is the founder of WordPress. To give you an idea on how big WordPress is – almost 20% of websites on the internet are powered by this platform! As Lent is coming, Matt announced on his (…) Read more

Children safety car seats in Malaysia, start using them now!

Why are safety car seats important? Motor vehicle crashes are the No. 1 killer of kids! Why? In many cases, children are either not properly buckled into their safety seats or parents don’t realize that a booster seat is vital to ensuring children fit safely in their vehicle’s seat belt. It is probably the most overlooked thing here in Malaysia where I have personally seen many parents quite happy to (…) Read more

Being in the tech industry, you read and hear about many amazing things being accomplished but this has to fall in the category of “outstanding”. Brilliant use of technology coming from a firefighter with a passion for programming. What’s interesting is the fact that he purchased his Google Glass by crowd-funding. He successfully (…) Read more

Thanks to Kamini for this interview. The Rakyat Post is a relatively new online daily here in Malaysia. It has some pretty interesting write ups and feature stories. Here is the short quote which I gave as part of the interview: Digital media practitioner V. Kugantharan says the media (…) Read more

The Lion in West Africa is Critically Endangered, Thanks to Destruction of Habitat & Poachers

There has been a “catastrophic collapse” in the number of lions in West Africa, with only around 400 left in the region, a new survey suggests. With fewer than 250 mature lions of breeding age, there are concerns the entire population could disappear. The research by Panthera, a non-profit organisation, was carried out in 17 countries, from Senegal to Nigeria, and took more than six years. West African lions are genetically distinct from (…) Read more

Google Pays Tribute to Yasmin Ahmad

Good to see Google paying tribute to the late great Yasmin Ahmad. The doodle features a water-coloured picture of Yasmin, along with the Google logo stylised in the ‘Sepet’ movie poster typeface. Google Doodles are the fun, surprising, and sometimes spontaneous changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous  artists, pioneers, and scientists.
